Overview
The Lenin Steelworks east of Krakow, the centrepiece of the socialist new town of Nowa Huta built from 1949. Planned as a proletarian counterweight to the old university city, it became a stronghold of Solidarity strikes in the 1980s. Ironmaking has since been wound down under ArcelorMittal while finishing lines continue.
