Zollverein Colliery
1932 - UNESCO site
Overview
The most beautiful coal mine in the world: Shaft 12, a cathedral of steel and brick in the New Objectivity style by architects Schupp and Kremmer, closed in 1986 and declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2001. The coal washery houses a design museum, and the coking plant glows at night.
