The Venice Arsenal: Assembly Lines Before the Industrial Revolution

Long before Cromford Mill, the Venetian Republic ran what may have been the largest industrial complex in Europe. Founded around 1104, the Arsenal covered a walled lagoon district where galleys moved stage by stage through a production canal, receiving standardized frames, oars, cordage, and munitions made by different guilds in different sheds.

At its 16th century peak, the Arsenalotti, several thousand strong, could reportedly fit out a fully equipped war galley in a single day. Machiavelli marveled at it as a model of organized capacity.

It remains standing proof that flow production is an idea older than steam..
